Since our Knoxville 2-week intensive wrapped up a few weeks ago, we wanted to check back in with one of the students, Melodie Sherer, COTA, on how her studies with ATU helped her.
"I want to tell you about my first day back to work, which happened to be an aquatic therapy day. I implemented several of the activities we learned in the first two classes with one of my younger patients who is reluctant to talk. We had a “private meeting” under the blanket and talked in our pirate and fairy voices; we did therapist supported sit-ups on the stairs, and played “Hungry, hungry hippos” (plus so much more). It was such fun! Later in the day I worked with a teenage medically fragile patient and put the Waterways ring on her, something I’ve never tried with teens before. She was very happy, and moved in various planes without any sensory distress. I can’t believe how much more confident I felt handling her today than in previous visits and how much more responsive and relaxed she was. I have been having my volunteers don the ring while I take them through some of the modified Watsu movements so they can experience what our patients experience in the water. "
Our 2-week intensives cover all the required courses to achieve your Aquaticist℠ credential in the minimum amount of time. Melodie's supervisor even shared their impressions of the course.
"My supervisor couldn’t believe I basically had my own private week of training since the classes were so small. I feel so fortunate to have had such a unique opportunity to learn from the three of you and the very few students who shared the classes with me. What a lovely group of people to spend time with! I learned something from every single person who attended."
The learning imparted during the 2-week intensives lasts even beyond the last day of class. Melodie also shared how she continued to expand her knowledge after returning home from the intensive.
"Thank you for the wealth of information in the course books! I have been reading since I got home and gleaning additional new tidbits. You were all such terrific presenters! I’m really grateful to have the books to continue to refer to since I don’t have you in the office next door to talk to as I implement these new skills."
